Got a good reason to write song!

PBS Teachers | Resources For The Classroom

I am first off sorry that this video did not show up for you on the blog. You just need to click on the like and then hit "View Resource". I could not get the special code needed to put it on here... sorry guys.

This video is short but adorable! I think that it would be a fantastic resource to use for your classroom (for the younger grades) because it is a song about having a reason to write. Routman talks about the importance of teaching your class to write with a purpose. I feel that this is imperative in making not only a good writer, but also in helping to make writing enjoyable for the writer and the readers. This song is something that can be used in your classrooms to help students understand the reasons behind writing and how important it is in everyday life. I think that it is sometimes not made all that clear to some students that writing is something that (even though we may not know it) is used every day for so many more reasons that we might not know. This song helps clarify that for younger students.

  1. I thought that this video was so adorable. Not only was the song great, but it conveyed an awesome message. Children do have a good reason to write. Writing is used in our everyday lives. Whether it be to write a grocery list, a phone number, or add up a bill at a restaurant. Writing is everywhere! If children do not learn all the privileges writing can give them, then they will end up struggling all throughout their lives.

We need to show students in our classroom that writing is essential. They need to write every day in order to improve. Also writing ever day will get students ready for all the writing that they will be experiencing in their future. Parents can only do so much in teaching their children. That is why we as teachers we need to do all that we can to make sure we give the students the best education they need in order to have a successful picture.

  2. I think it’s important to show that learning can be fun. And this is especially important with writing. The video as said above is a great example for showing that opportunities to write are everywhere—but is this video only helpful for elementary school students? I think the majority of us shared in class that in our elementary school years we enjoyed writing because we were given chances to be creative and express ourselves. I wonder how this video would be taken in a high school class, the age when most students—even students in our class begin to view writing as a monotonous chore. It’s a silly video that can remind writers to not stress so much when it comes to writing. If we future teachers can remind students that writing is an opportunity for self-expression not solely an analyzation of a specified prompt we can improve their attitudes towards writing.

  3. This video is so great! It is definitely short and sweet, but that is what makes it so wonderful. This is something that teachers who are working with younger students could definitely use. Singing it as a class together right before a designated "free-writing" time would get the students excited and more motivated to write. The song shows that writing is not just for school and such, but it truly is used all day and everyday. I also noticed that in the video, there were sub-titles, which allow people to follow along with the song by reading the words while singing. I just think this would be a great tool in a young classroom that could truly add to a student's love and appreciation for writing.

  4. This video was so adorable! I love PBS Kids! I agree it would be a great way to encourage writing in your classroom and I am glad you found it because I plan on teaching Kindergarten and I definitely could use this. It not only has a catchy beat, but it points out the ways we write every day. You don’t realize how much you actually write in your everyday life and for kids to see that writing comes in all shapes and forms may inspire them to want to do it even more. Especially in Kindergarten kids are just learning how to write letters and put words together, so having them do a simple task as “help their mom make a grocery list” would be simple task for them, but also a great learning experience. Not only will they learn about writing, but learn how to spell and about different items found in the grocery store. You could also make a whole lesson out of it. Look I am already coming up with ideas :)

  5. I loved this movie! My boyfriend has a little daughter who is in Pre-school and we have been trying to teach her how to write letters. Sometimes she gets really frustrated and doesn’t want to play with her workbook anymore. I think that this movie and song would really give her motivation to want to write. We try to tell her that writing her name is beneficial for many reasons but she doesn’t seem to believe us. I think that by seeing this video and how other kids like to write and have found ways to incorporate writing everyday, she would be more willing to try. The way that kids show different ways that they use writing everyday is a great motivator to young kids. Writing is such a major necessity in our world today. This movie demonstrates how much fun it can be to write up a grocery list to help out mom, or to write a postcard to a friend. This song is a really great way to show kids that writing can be fun and can open doors to many experiences.

  6. I think that this video is awesome! It is an amazing resource for teaching children that writing really can be fun! The cute characters would make it really enjoyable for kids to watch also. I think that it is important to constantly stress that writing can be fun. Sometimes writing does have to be serious, but other times, writing can simply be done for pleasure. I think that it is extremely vital to get children to write every single day. Much of writing shouldn't be graded, because through experimental writing, children will find their voice as writers and this will reflect in their writing that is actually being graded. I think that writing a journal, or writing a letter to a classmate just saying hello and telling them something about their day might be a fun way to get children to write. Oftentimes, children forget that writing is done on a daily basis and it's important to develop these skills as they become adults.

  7. I found this song a perfect example of how teachers can use songs not only for transition from one lesson to another, but also a way to keep writing interesting for students while still practicing it routinely. Teachers can use classroom songs as an introduction to quick writes to get students excited and focused on their writing. An example of an introduction song for an elementary level quick write could be:

"Hello class, its quick write time.
So open your binders and open your minds.
Write about your thoughts or whats bugging you,
So we can see the wonderful writer in you."

While this example is a little corny, it gives us an idea how songs can be incorporated into our daily lesson plans and also applied to specific areas like writing.

  8. I thought that was a really cute song. It conveyed a great message too. There are many benefits to being able to write, as well as reading and speaking. I think that this video is so cute, especially for young children. Giving children an opening to cross over reading, writing, and music will definitely help with their creativity in the future. There are so many ways in which you could probe the children to write. It’s also great because it also illustrates how writing can be done for pleasure, not just something assigned by a teacher. Even with the song, children need to see that writing can be fun, especially with the testing that will come up in their future. If they lose that joy early on the testing they will do in the future, or any sort of writing, will be very strained.

  9. Cute video. I would even think about showing this in my classroom with young children so they can SEE how important writing is and how often it is done on a daily basis.

I think this video clarifies what Routman was saying when talking about making writing purposeful. Students can hear and see how often writing is used and how important it is to know how and improve your writing daily. After showing this video, I think students will understand writing can be fun and make a personal connection with it. Writing just to write can be fun, and making a list with your mom for the store is super cute! :)

  10. This song was such a cute way to incorporate teaching children the importance of writing! The video goes hand in hand with the song and I know that my kids in the first grade classroom that I work in would absolutely love this video. I could see them singing this song again and again every time we do a writing assignment. Right now, anytime we do corrections we sing "put your red on your head, on your head" to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it". This break in the routine allows the students to stop, refocus, get their red pens out, put their hands on their head, and sing the short song while we're moving into correcting. I have noticed that singing this song everyday really helps refocus the students in the moment and what we're doing.

I could see singing this song with the students when we're going to start a new writing lesson. It could work as a great transition into a new lesson and refocus the students. Also, the message is a great transition. We could talk about writing and why the particular writing lesson we're going to learn is important. As Routman states, making writing meaningful is an important aspect for teachers to incorporate into their lessons. I think I'm going to try this song in my class, I love it!
