Here we see a picture of the women and children of Darfur. Through this picture we are able to see so much just by the looks on their faces. Through this picture you can have your students write a short story about one of the people in the picture. You can have your students research the horrible events that are taking place in Darfur and have them write a story or a poem about this picture. There is so much life captured in this picture. You are able to see an entire story through this one picture. What other questions would you ask youtr students after showing them this picture. What ways could you get your students involved in helping the victims of Darfur? Do you think we are Americans should do anything to stop this genocide from happening? As future teahers we have the ability to shape young minds, and we have a responsibility to ensure our students are well educated on everything that is going on in our world.

I think that this is a fantastic idea. This forces students to think deeply without them even noticing it. I think this would be a great activity to do in the classroom because students will have to call upon their creative side to correlate what they believe someone's story is. This is also a good activity because it increases their global awareness to horrible things that go on in our world today. I think as Americans we have the obligation to take some measures to stop what is going on in Darfur. That being said, it is a very delicate and complex issue that requires careful planning and thought. I do not believe by simply stopping the genocide by force will help the long term situation in Darfur. Just as we do as teachers, we must take a multi-pronged approach to Darfur and help install a stable government, police, etc., as well as stop the genocide, to ensure the prosperity of the region.
ReplyDeleteI really like this Idea! It is cool because it involves writing and helps the students to understand current events, and has them put themselves in someone else's shoes and think outside of their own understanding. It is a great opportunity to impact the children's lives. This activity will be more than just an assignment, im sure its something the students will carry with them for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI posted my comment under the wrong blog but oh well. I think these type of projects are crucial in raising awareness of what is going out outside our borders. We should not cloud our students minds with negative images and information, but we should hit on the key atrocities going on around the world.
